The STARFLEET star ship USS PROVIDENCE, NCC-71796 was formed in December, 1994, in Jackson, TN. The shuttlecraft PROVIDENCE was a chapter-in-training under the tutelage of the USS Aeon, formerly known as the Alacrity, located in Memphis, TN. in Region One. The newsletter staff was formed in January 1995, and the first edition of the newsletter, COMLINK, was printed in the same month.
In March 1995, the shuttlecraft PROVIDENCE received authorization from the Department of Technical Services for it's name. The Command Staff was appointed in February 1995, and the Executive Committee was finalized in April 1995, with all positions filled. In November 1996 PROVIDENCE was commissioned as a starship with all rights and responsibilities due that position. Our Gemini class ship design was approved by Starfleet's Advanced Starship Design Bureau and the Department of Technical Services Starfleet in November 1998 and we celebrated on December 5th 1998.

Her ongoing mission: to seek out new friends and fellow Star Trek fans: to promote an optimistic future as envisioned in the Star Trek universe and to support that positive vision of the future by engaging in meaningful community service, social activities and various creative endeavors.

How did we get our name? It comes from The Next Generation episode “The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1”. The name of a Federation colony located on the planet Jouret IV. In 2366, all 900 hundred colonist and itself disappeared, leaving a huge crater in the ground. The loss of the colony was attributed to a Borg attack That colony is known as New Providence.
Our NCC Number (71796) has meaning also.
